The case for brass
A refillable case is only meaningful if it is worth keeping. Most are not. Why ours is machined from brass, left unlacquered, and outlives the shade it was made for.
Refillable packaging has become a claim rather than a design. A plastic outer, a plastic insert, a mechanism that survives three or four changes before the click goes soft — technically refillable, practically a component with a slightly longer life than the thing inside it.
Brass behaves differently because it is not trying to look permanent. It is permanent. It has weight in the hand, it machines to a tolerance that keeps a mechanism honest for years, and when it is dropped it dents rather than cracks.
It also ages in a direction we like. Unlacquered brass takes a patina from being carried: a warmth in the places your fingers land, a slight darkening along the seam. We leave it bare. Two years in, two people’s cases do not look alike, and that is the whole argument for the material.
There is a mechanical case as well. Brass has enough mass to hold a bullet straight, so the mechanism does not need to be over-engineered in plastic to compensate. Fewer parts, a tighter fit, a quieter close.
What complicates the story is our own model. We make one piece a month and we do not make it again, so a refill for February’s crimson does not exist in June. The case outlives the shade by design. That sounds like a flaw and we have decided it is not.
The reason is that the case is a standard, not an accessory. Every lipstick and every pressed pan in the Mirevoir year is built to the same two internal formats. A case that arrived with one drop takes the refill from any later drop that fits it. You do not keep it for the shade. You keep it because it is the thing you put shades into.
The cost is real and we would rather name it than dress it. Brass is heavier to ship, more expensive to machine, and it does not come in colours. It is also the only version of refillable we could look at in ten years without embarrassment.
If you have one already, it is the part of us that is not on a monthly clock. Everything else here is designed to end. That was designed to stay.
In praise of running out
Scarcity is usually a tactic. We would like to make the case that it can also be a way of making things — and that a house which runs out is telling you something true about how it works.
